Southeast Asia’s Path to Becoming the World’s 4th Largest Economy by 2030: A Call for Action to Strengthen its Fragile Agri-Food System
Southeast Asia is poised to become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030. With rapid economic growth on the horizon, the region will experience significant demographic shifts and an increasing demand for food, with food consumption expected to rise by 40% by 2050. However, this growth also brings significant challenges, particularly in the agriculture sector, where smallholder farms, outdated farming practices, environmental degradation, and climate change create a fragile agri-food system.
In response to these urgent challenges, the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices (CIIP), a non-profit initiative established by Temasek Trust, has partnered with Wavemaker Impact and received support from the Philanthropy Asia Alliance to publish the report titled “Seeding the Future: Transforming Smallholder Farms for a Sustainable Tomorrow.” The report aims to drive meaningful change in Southeast Asia’s agricultural landscape by providing actionable insights from over 30 key stakeholders, including impact investors, philanthropic organizations, solution providers, development programme owners, and regional and international bodies.
Key findings from the report include:
- Right-sized, Right-priced Solutions: Successful solutions for smallholder farms must be tailored to the specific needs of local communities—accessible, affordable, and scalable.
- Impact-First Investing: Impact should be at the core of all investment decisions, with a focus on creating long-term positive outcomes for both communities and the environment.
- Increased Investment in Agri-Food: More capital must flow into the agriculture, food, and land use sectors to enable transformation and sustainability.
- Cross-Sector Collaboration: Breaking the cycle of inefficiency and fragmentation requires joint efforts across sectors, uniting public and private stakeholders to drive innovation and solutions.
This report is a clarion call for action and collaboration among all stakeholders in the region to invest in and transform the agri-food system. It emphasizes the urgency of addressing the vulnerabilities within Southeast Asia’s food production systems to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future.
